Now Josh Klingoffer is no John Frusciante, but the two have collaborated on other projects before for example Ataxia. The two work very well with each other, and have a very similar
style. I have the upmost confidence in Josh becoming the Red Hot Chili Peppers newest addition. I know a lot of fans are going to be upset about Josh being in the band, but this was really John's choice. He wanted to be able to work on more on his solo material. I will gladly say that if the Chili Peppers had to replace John I am thankful that they had replaced John with Josh. Everyone needs to keep in consideration that John had once replaced the Chili's original guitarist Hillel Slovak. Life goes on. Here's their firs new single.

Dead Larry "She Goes" Plunder Fest 2011

Hey last weekend was the most perfect Plunder Fest!
Dead Larry is a band that has been rocking it for a while now in the Minnesota Music Fest Scene.
My friend Zachary and I had the pleasure of meeting the bass player while we were adventuring through the woods/camp ground on a random path at night looking for the fire show. Dead Larry had just finished their set a very awesome performance.
For those who do not know Plunder Fest it is a Pirate themed music festival, so everyone busted out their pirate gear for the weekend.
My friends The Stalking Butlers played Friday night their set went well. I know I haven't posted my Bella videos yet, but I do plan on putting their performance up as well.
I've been on a hiatus going to festivals, attending TSB shows, and enjoying any music/random events I stumble upon (Pride Parade, Back to the 50's, Free Folk music in Lauring Park, and the occasional Dub Step show) Shows are getting so expensive lately, or sell out real quick. It's hard to catch a real good musicians now days. That is why music festivals are so great. It's a good chance to discover new musicians and bands. At Plunder I found the best opportunities to meet musicians in bands that play on the main stage and at drum circles.

Over the 4th I went to High Plains to see Trampled by Turtles a band I had been dieing to see for a very long time and they did not disappoint

Just got back from a most excellent Bella!
Beats Antique. One of the best performances there!
Hopefully soon I will be able to post my own footage that I had recorded myself at their show.
The band had a beautiful performance at the festival, great vibes, great audience reaction, and they always do very well when it comes to performing live. It was very similar to this video.
I would recommend this band to anyone!
Beats Antique will be at Electric Forest up in Michigan around 4th of July weekend.
Otherwise I would highly recommend anyone to catch this band the next chance they come around Minnesota.

Interview with Alex Staples (Toxic Waste)

I recently conducted an interview with MSB Music Biz student, Alex Staples. Alex goes to the BC campus, has been featured on Red Vinyl Media albums and at shows, and creates music under the name Toxic Waste. Here's what he had to say:

Tell us about your music?
My music is tends to be classified as a combination of raw lyrics and passion that's hard to miss. I started writing lyrics when I was around 10 years old. The first time I ever performed live was when I was 16 years old. I was was extremely nervous and on the verge of collapsing.

What made you want to pursue music as your career?
There was no other option. Plain and simple. That's all I ever wanted to do.

Why MSB?
MSB was quick with the phones. There were the first one's to call back. I started at IPR but had problems with the faculty.

Your favorite artist?
If I had to choose one, hands down, it would be Eminem. No other compares to the amount of inspiration he has fueled me with.

If you think about, it's a very interesting industry. When I was a little kid in the 90's, my sister would tape stuff off of the radio with her boombox and its tape recorder. She would also do the same with CD's. That was then. This is now. People are able to access free, illegal music now all of the time with computers. But, the fact is, that it has actually been occuring for a long time. Even before digital technology. People recorded bootlegs at live shows and sold them for a profit. Some people shoplifted from record stores. Let's face it, music is expensive. At a certain point, people ask, "Can I really afford to buy any more?" People go to stores like Cheapo and get great deals on used CD's, but then they find out that new CD's are sold for $18.99! It gets crazy expensive. I don't think I would pay more than $12 for a good CD. I want to hear clips of songs before I buy, especially of artists that are not on the radio. Sometimes the only good radio is Sirius or XM radio. I like podcasts that show you clips of songs by indie bands. I like record stores that aren't afraid to play unheard of music. What are your thoughts?

Minnesota Mom Hit With $1.5 Million Fine for Downloading 24 Songs

What's the value of a song? Jammie Thomas-Rasset has spent the last few years in court debating that question. The Minnesota mother of four is being penalized for illegally downloading and sharing 24 songs on the peer-to-peer file-sharing network Kazaa in 2006, but how much she owes the record labels has been in question. The jury in her third trial has just ruled that Thomas-Rasset should pay Capitol Records $1.5 million, CNET reports, which breaks down to $62,500 per song. It's a heavy penalty considering the 24 tunes would only cost approximately $24 on iTunes, which was Thomas-Rasset' argument, too.

Thanks to Thomas-Rasset's colorful case, she has become the public face of the record industry's battle with illegal downloaders. In her first trial, in 2007, the jury demanded she pay $222,000 for violating the copyright on more than 1,700 songs by Green Day, Aerosmith and Richard Marx, to name a few. (Marx said he was "ashamed" to be associated with the "farcical" prosecution of an illegal downloader.) Thomas-Rasset maintained she wasn't the computer user who did the file sharing, and her legal team cited an error in jury instruction to secure a second trial in 2009 that ended with a much harsher result: an astronomical fine of $1.92 million. However, earlier this year a U.S. District Court judge found the $1.92 million penalty against Thomas-Rasset to be "monstrous and shocking" and "gross injustice" before lowering it to $54,000, or $2,250 a song. Thomas-Rasset and her legal team decided to appeal that decision, too.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the organization that represents the four major record labels, was pleased by the most recent decision, even if it has no intention to collect the $1.5 million from Thomas-Rasset. "Now with three jury decisions behind us along with a clear affirmation of Ms. Thomas-Rasset's willful liability, it is our hope that she finally accepts responsibility for her actions," the RIAA said in a statement. Earlier this year, the RIAA offered Thomas-Rasset the opportunity to end the legal battle for $25,000 and an admission of guilt; Thomas-Rasset declined.

Burying a Midwestern mom in insurmountable debt isn't the best publicity move, so rather than argue the labels are entitled to the cash, the RIAA has sought to make this trial into a cautionary tale for anyone considering illegally downloading music -- a reminder that there are penalties. But as the constantly declining weekly Nielsen SoundScan sales figures demonstrate, nothing seems to have deterred music fans from stealing rather than purchasing songs and albums. And in a digital world now dominated by Bit Torrent and Rapidshare, a trial over a music-sharing dinosaur like Kazaa seems nothing but antiquated. (Last month, after a decade of illegal file sharing, peer-to-peer service LimeWire was shut down by the government, much to the surprise of the millions who thought LimeWire had faded years ago into the Internet ether.)

Still, Thomas-Rasset and her legal team are already making plans to appeal, setting the stage for a fourth trial. "The fight continues," promised Thomas-Rasset's lawyer Kiwi Camara. Even if Thomas-Rasset were to win the next trial, the RIAA would likely appeal that decision to ensure that copyright infringement without penalization won't happen. This story has the potential to drag on well into the next decade -- when for $1.5 million, all of Thomas-Rasset's four kids could finish law school and take up the fight on her behalf.

Okay, so we all know the deal about digital downloads. They are good and they are bad. There are people that will pay for the music, and there’s people that won’t. But what a lot of people don’t think about is free music that is found on fan websites. This includes music and video that was recorded live at concerts by fans of the band. It’s not something that is often discussed. These websites just post it for fans to download for free, right after it’s been recorded. It’s like a bootleg, but digital instead.
For several years, I have been visiting fan sites of my favorite bands. Either the fans that visit the website or the fan that created the website post the songs/videos that they recorded live at one of the band’s concerts for other fans to hear. This is done every so often, but it’s a major hit whenever it does. Especially if it’s a new song that nobody has heard of yet. As far as I know, this is done on most fan sites of popular bands.

What are your thoughts on this? Should artists get paid royalties for this?

For now, take a look at a band that was popular on the local music scene in the early 1960's. The Chancellors. They did a cover of "Little Latin Lupe Lu" by the Righteous Brothers," as well as a few other recordings of their own, and made it to the top of the charts on KDWB with the song. They used to play at the 8th floor auditorium at the downtown Macy's in Minneapolis. Prince recently played there a few years ago, and he often played there in the 80's. But now it is mostly for the annual Christmas displays during the holiday season. Why can't bands play there again? It used to be the hot place to play in town for many years. Wouldn't that be cool? Have you ever thought about the music scenes from past decades in Minneapolis?

The Importance of Promotion

It seems like these days, with the rise of social media, self promotion is easier than ever for an up and coming artist trying to get their name out to the public. I'm not saying that promoters are obsolete and that there is absolutely no need for them, but, it seems like these days it’s not too hard to be your own promoter. Down the line, yeah, maybe once you’re big and famous you won’t have time to promote yourself. Although, when starting out, having your music streaming on Myspace, iLike, and purevolume is a huge plus for getting music heard; because it is where most teen and young adult are searching for their new favorite band. Plus, having a twitter and facebook account is really important, too, because it is the perfect way to make sure everyone knows where and when you are playing your rocking gig. I’m not saying that everyone who has a networking site is going to be a huge star. I am saying if you don’t have any, I hope you’re happy with just mom, dad, and a couple friends watching you play. With the Internet, it is now as easy as pushing send to get a fanbase going and getting recognition for your possible talents.

The Music Industry

The music industry is a very difficult business to make it in; some say it’s a one in a million chance that you’ll make it. In my opinion, anyone can do anything if they work hard and persevere when difficult times occur. In the music industry, most artists don’t get a lot of sleep and are always working. You have to be dedicated to making music to remain successful in this industry, and not just be in it for the money.
There are many artists going through lots of problems in their lives, and just because they are rich and famous doesn’t mean they go through their lives without problems. You can’t just have one talent and expect people to remain a fan, you have to be doing multiple things to maintain your image. Your image and reputation is what’s really going to sell. Most artists make a hit record, and then they quit and lose what they gained. There are a handful of artists who remain consistent with making music for the people.

In the music industry, album sales have been on a decline. Many have
weighed in on what they believe the cause is. Many blame it more so on
technology and the easy access to burn tracks. Some blame it on the
industries inabilities to put out quality albums. There is no definite
way to pin point exactly what the main cause is; there is just a lot of
speculation. I personally believe that, yes, technology plays a role in
the decline of sales, but I mainly place the blame on the artists and
labels for not putting together albums that fans want to hear from
front to back. Although many artist have to confine to their label, I
do think that more artists should stand up for their art and give the
fans what they want to hear. So, yes, technology is to blame somewhat,
but we as the fans need to express our feelings to these artists and
labels and get them back to making classic albums instead of looking
for just hit singles.

As I sit back and write my papers for my Current Trends class, I cannot help but wonder what the future of music holds. Some of my paper topics on current trends in the industry include: musician fan phone numbers, music and fashion, video podcasts, and the new iTunes program that lets you get twitter updates from your favorite artists and allows you to see their current playlists. What are some of your favorite current trends in the music industry? I think that the industry is growing so rapidly that things will just keep going. It will only get better and better.

Chapter five in “The Future of Music” by David Kusek and Gerd Leonhard discusses of the future of music sales. It discusses how CD’s are becoming obsolete due to digital music and pricing. I think that CD’s should be lowered in price, because who wants to spend $15 to buy one when they can get it for free or buy single tracks for 99 cents? Most people just want the singles anyway. In addition, the retail space of CD’s is shrinking, making it harder to find certain music. So much more is offered online and more artists can release stuff online without a record label. According to the article, a lot of fans buy videogames that feature music, which outsells a lot of CD’s and digital tracks. Many bands make money through merchandise and touring sales and give away free tracks. The future of music can change at any moment.

Current trends in the industry....

A current trend in the music industry that I think is interesting is when bands have their own iPhone app. I know certain bands such as No Doubt have their own app that features exclusive videos, news, and various other content. It is a fun way to stay in touch with your fans and its either free or of low cost to them. I like being able to search content, download songs, catch the latest news, and watch videos all in one click; instead of having to go on their website. It's a fun way to promote your music and get the fans involved as more and more technology becomes available on mobile devices. It can also be very interactive when fans are able to upload their own concert videos of the band and participate in chats with other fans. Just search your favorite band's name in your app store, and see what you can find!

Combined ticket sales for the biggest concert tours in North America during the first half of the year fell to their lowest point since 2005 as the weak economy and "piggish" ticket prices kept fans at home, a trade publication reported on Thursday.
The top 100 tours grossed $965.5 million during the first six months, a 17 percent slide from the year-ago period, and the lowest for the time frame since the $731 million haul in the first half of 2005, according to Pollstar magazine.
High-profile outings by the Eagles, the Jonas Brothers and the latest crop of American Idol finalists suffered poor sales. Christina Aguilera, Limp Bizkit and the Go-Gos' canceled their tours, and organizers of the all-female Lilith Fair organizers said last week that they had scrapped about a third of the shows.
Pollstar said fans "may be turned off by piggish top-tier prices, resentful of ticket add-on fees, and downright angry when they hear about discounted tickets after they have paid full price."
But it noted that tours by Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and rock band Muse did well, as did singer/songwriter James Taylor's trek with Carole King.
On a worldwide basis, Australian rockers AC/DC came out on top, selling $177.5 million worth of tickets, followed by Bon Jovi with $75.7 million and Metallica with $60.8 million, Pollstar said. Taylor and King took in $53.9 million, ahead of the Black Eyed Peas with $48.4 million.
In the United States and Canada, Bon Jovi ($52.8 million), Taylor/King ($41 million), Swift ($34.2 million) and Paul McCartney ($31.5 million) led the field.
"Fans still crave live music and will come out to shows when they can afford it, despite the industry's misguided efforts to squeeze the fun out of the experience," Pollstar said.

Summer is approaching and Red Vinyl is hard at work! This fall we will be putting on a show for the Grand Re-opening of the MSB BC campus! The show will be held outside at the BC campus on September 14th! Chaz and Josh are going to perform, BUT we need your help as well! We are looking for artists to put on our free digital download card. What's the best part of touring?

Meeting new people, seeing new places, and being able to perform the music live.

-You've lived in both Chicago and Los Angeles. How does the music scene in Chicago vary from the music scene in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles has more music going on year round since the weather is always gorgeous. Unfortunately, Chicago kinda shuts down in the winter because bands don't really want to hit the Midwest December-February. Los Angeles has some of my favorite venues, like Largo (where Jon Brion plays every friday). Chicago has very loyal fans and very dedicated musicians though, so both have their perks.

-Who's the most influential musician?

To me, or in the world? I'd say the biggest influences on me have been the Beach Boys, The Beatles, the Motown Collection, Elvis Costello, The Kinks, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell.

-What advice would you give to the aspiring musician?
To write constantly and always search for new music!

I conducted an interview with Red Vinyl's very own artist, Chaz Croaston. Here it is!

What do you plan on accomplishing in the next five years with your musical career?

In the next five years I plan on hopefully being done with school. I’ve decided to go for my bachelor’s degree so it’s going to take a big longer then I had originally planned. I also hope to have my first album out with help from Red Vinyl Media and my crew from Crooked Creations. I also hope to have helped Red Vinyl establish itself as a working label for future students to learn from.

Who's your biggest influence?

Really my biggest influence is my friends, family and life in general. I have such an eclectic taste in music that it’s tough for me to pull a single artist out. I really love what Dj Quik does as far as his production and as far as hustle Tech N9ne impresses me a lot. I grew up with a mother that only listened to oldies and father that only listened to classic rock, so all that old school Motown and classic rock bands like the Eagles got there hooks in me too. I’m not ashamed to say that I can sit down and listen to classical music for hours too. One of my favorites is Sergey Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27: IV. Allegro Vivace to me it just really paints a picture which is what I hope to do with my music.

When can we expect to hear new music?

Right now I’m sort of in a rebuilding stage. I have a few things I’m working on with classmate Alex Staples AKA Toxic Waste. Mostly I’m trying to focus on getting the new podcast I’m working on with Alex set to our liking and spread the word on that. I’m also pursuing opportunities with new producers daily. So if any aspiring producers out there read this and want to help me out with a track get at me. I’m also entertaining the idea of lending a verse to any project that any artist out there would like me on. On that note though I don’t really do that bubble gum rap so if you’re trying to sound like Young Money you can just leave me out of it.

What's the best advice you can give to an aspiring artist?

Stay hungry, stay humble, keep learning because you never know everything no matter what you think, be open to new ideas, don’t take criticism from any producer or engineer personal they just want you to sound your best, there is no such thing as writer’s block so keep the pen moving even if you know it’s not your best work, and don’t give up because good things come to those who want it most.

Wow! The Celebrate Women in Music event last night at the Fine Line was super awesome! The panel discussion featured some super talented women who are music industry professionals, and it was very informative.

Red Vinyl is going to be working with the Artist Management Class at MSB Brooklyn Center to put on an outdoor show this summer. It's gonna be on September 14th. More info/details will follow as we put together this show.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Also, if you are looking for a cheap show to go to, there is one on Sunday, April 11 at the Vault in Buffalo. The show features Foxy Shazam with opening acts Bad Rabbits and The Young Veins. The Young Veins feature two ex members of Panic! at the Disco. Doors at 5pm and show at 5:30pm. $10-$12.

Record Stores

Record stores are shutting down everywhere with the exception of a few independent record stores in major cities, and people are turning to online formats to get their music. What is your favorite thing about record stores? Is it the instore appearences? The atmosphere? The fact that you would rather own a copy of a CD than a digital file? What makes record stores your favorite place to buy music? I myself prefer certain songs on CD or Vinyl, I like the atmosphere and the people who work at record stores, and I like the posters and CD's I can find only there. What are your thoughts? I really like record shops like the Electric Fetus or Cheapo.

Let there be music -- and let it be legal, poll shows

SINGAPORE (Reuters Life!) – Music really makes the world go round, with most people listing it as their favorite pastime, and one that they're willing to pay for to enjoy legally, according to a global survey.

The "Music Matters" survey of 8,000 adults in 13 countries, by market research firm Synovate, showed 63 percent ranked themselves as being passionate about music, with Brazilians at the top of the scale and Australians at the bottom.

Only 6 percent of people across the world say they "couldn't care less" about music.

"Since the beginning of humankind, there has been a passion for music," Steve Garton, global head of media research for Synovate, said in a statement.

"From the primitive beating of drums, to even before we are born when we're already used to the steady beat of our mother's heart, we are programed to have a passion for music."

This love for music drove nearly four in 10 people to buy a music compact disc from a shop, compared to the 11 percent globally who confessed to buying pirated music CDs.

More than two-thirds of respondents said they had paid for music they had downloaded from the Internet, and 8 percent said they paid for music applications, or apps, on their phone.

Music streaming is also a big fan favorite, with one in five people globally, topped by Korea at 60 percent, streaming songs in the past month from legal music streaming services.

Robert Alleyne, research manager for Synovate in Britain, said that while illegal downloads and counterfeit CDs still plague the music industry, the stigma attached to these activities had largely succeeded in reducing piracy.

"For a long time downloading illegally was easier and faster than downloading legally but not anymore. And consumers have taken to these new legal services," he said.

"I fully expect the number of people who are illegally downloading to decline over time. If it were not for the strides taken in 2009, I would have expected the 13 percent of Brits who admitted to file-sharing to be double, even triple that."

Not only are consumers willing to pay for music, they're also happy to spend cash on getting to know their favorite performers better through attending performances or gaining access to exclusive information or parties, the poll showed.

Americans are the most likely to pay extra for these "member-only" privileges while more than two-thirds of French say they're willing to pay for access to artists' other creative output such as poetry and artwork.

But, given an opportunity, most people would rather have music for free, even it means putting up with all those advertisements on music downloading sites.

Forty-four percent of people globally are happy to listen to ads if it lets them download free music while 41 percent are ok with it they can get access to free music streaming.

And almost one quarter of people globally would happily provide personal information in exchange for access to free downloads, topped by Britons (38 percent), Australian and Koreans (37 percent each).

Indie Pop - A Blanket Sweep

Genres in music are intended to narrow the field of musicians, a way to classify and group artists and their sound. But what does one do when a band defies description, a band that borrows elements from every genre? Simple - create a generic sub-genre. Indie pop, short for “independent popular,” defines all those bands that are popular among music lovers in the underground scene, rather than the generic public. Bands, such as Stars, Death Cab for Cutie or The Sounds, who don’t sound similar to one another but also don’t sound like anything else fit perfectly in this sub-genre. These bands are perfect for those looking to increase their “music cred” with their peers, as these bands aren’t typically played on the mainstream radio stations. The band is making tracks from its new album, "Jupiter's Darling" (Soverign Artists), as well as the exclusive song "Love Hurts," available to fans via P2P service Morpheus in the form of Weed files -- Windows Media Files encoded with Microsoft's
e chosen format will allow fans to download the files and listen to each three times for free. After three "preview" listens, the file will lock up and the user will have to purchase it via online music distributor Weedshare to continue listening. Once a track is "shared" with another network user, it will once again allow that user three free listens before prompting for the fee.Interestingly, each Morpheus user who redistributes the tracks will be able to profit financially for his or her contribution to the distribution chain. Users will receive payback on a sliding scale of 20% for direct sales, 10% for secondary-level sales (the buyer got the track from someone who got it from the distributor), and so forth. The band hopes empowering users to take part in distributing its music and getting compensated will result in a profitable marketing opportunity. The effort marks the first time Morpheus has been involved with selling music to users via its P2P networks.YOU'RE SUCH A WIRE: MP3 blogs seem to be thriving recently in spite of the music industry's attempts to curb online piracy. One of the guiding concepts that the blogs have used to escaped the biz's wrath is to focus on music by little-known acts, primarily independent artists who consent to fans sharing their music online as a form of marketing. Swen's Weblog provides blog addicts with a fresh angle on MP3 subject matter -- it concentrates on music made by artists covered in U.K. magazine the Wire. Twiztid!

Twiztid is coming to Minneapolis! The show is at First Ave. The tickets went on sale January 15th, 2010. Tickets cost $21. If your looking for a fun time and interesting show then you should come check these guys out. Opening artists include Blaze and Kung Fu Vampire. Personally I have never heard Kung Fu Vampire. But if they can get on tour with Twiztid then they must be good. For people that don't know Twiztid, they are a hard core rap duo. The music is mostly underground. They don't rap about your usual subjects that you hear on the radio like, money and having cars and stuff. And if they do they put a nice twist on things so it's a bit more crazier.

Nickelback

"Here's your nickel back." Mike Kroeger used this phrase while working at Starbucks and when he and his brother formed a band they chose the name Nickelback. Nickelback was formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta, Canada. The band consists of four members, three of which are original. Chad Kroeger, lead vocals and lead guitar; Ryan Peake, guitar and backing vocals; Mike Kroeger, bass guitar; and Daniel Adair, drums and back vocals. Since the band was formed they have released six albums with fifteen songs in the top 100 and six in the top 10. As a band they have been criticised by many publications such as Rolling Stone, USAToday, Blender, and World Magazine for lack of originality and generic modern rock. On the flip side ChartAttack and Billboard have praised Nickelbacks's innovativeness for pushing the confines of modern rock. By composing songs with lyrics about getting drunk, having sex, and a fellow rock artist being killed on stage, they have acquired a huge fan base. Nickelback is one of the most successful bands of the 2000's selling over 30 million records and counting.

Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan

I feel a little weird writting about this, but that's the thing that makes it all the more interesting. The death of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, Avenged Sevenfold's drummer, left 2009 even more somber than it already was with another celebrity death. The thing that sets it apart from the others is how even if you were just a moderate fan of his band you felt like you lost a friend yourself. He was a very warm, loving, and not to mention hilarious person, and the way he always seemed to show his true self made you feel like he was a close friend of yours. He was a phenomenal drummer and one of my favorites, but not only that, he was a musical genius. He could drum whatever he wanted, though he always wrote what was best for the song and added amazing fills. He could write amazing music also, which was shown in his side band Pinkly Smooth. While the long term future of Avenged Sevenfold is uncertain, one thing that does remain certain is the the legacy of The Rev will stay intact for years to come. You're never going to come back Jimmy, but when you come back, i'll be waiting.
